Martham & District Angling club was formed from the break up of the old Hemsby Viking Angling Club in the early eighties. We have had the fishing rights to Martham Pits since 1984, and the place is now both totally different to look at and fish from when we took it over. Always renowned as a good Tench fishery, with our yearly stocking program we have built up a fine head of fish since 1984. Carp are now the main species with fish over 20lb caught in the B pit, smaller Carp are found in all our Pits especially the Match man’s favourite the C pit. There are also very good Roach and Rudd to be had, with fish of over 2lb predominantly in the A pit. There is a very good head of Bream in all our Pits, with most fish around the 3 to 4lb mark, but there are some clonkers of 8 lb to be had. Perch are another well stocked fish with a reported 4lb fish caught from the B pit. The Tench are still around although in lesser numbers than before, but with fish to 8lb it is still worth fishing for them. Because of the relative small size of the Pits we have always had limited membership, but what started as a syndicate of 10 has now risen to nearly 200 members. Because of the popularity of the water we also have a lengthy membership waiting list, which at the time of writing this list has been closed due to the ever spiralling numbers of people wanting to join the club.
Day tickets can be obtained from either CO-OP in Martham. Current Pricing is £8 per Adult and £5 Junior between the age of 15 to 18.
The club does not just offer Martham Pits fishing, we run various Match leagues all year. The main Match league's are run on Sundays during the summer and winter months but there are various weekly and evening leagues to suit everyone. Also the club has a yearly charity match at Martham Pits where the best part of £400 is raised for local charities. Naturally we have a Christmas Fare match in December. The club also rents a stretch of the River Thurne at OBY and club matches take place regular, mainly in the summer and autumn, this stretch is only open to club members, day tickets are not allowed for this water.
The club also has its own boats which are kept at Rollesby Sailing club and this gives our member’s access to the Trinity Broads. If any Member wishes to use these boats they must contact the Boats Co-Ordinator.
The club holds monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of the month for all our members and holds regular committee meetings discuss various issues.
